Seminars & lectures

Our seminars and lectures bring the latest in biblical scholarships to the wider public

Seminars and Public Lectures

We regularly organise seminars and public lectures based on specific topic or theme to bring the latest development in biblical scholarship to the wider public.

Our annual Biblical Studies Seminar is one of our initiatives where we wrestle with contemporary issues affecting us by listening to the Bible by engaging in interdisciplinary studies. We started the Biblical Studies Seminar in 2014, and we will be organising the 5th Annual Seminar on 10 March 2018.

Our past Biblical Studies Seminar:
2017: Bible and Gender
2016: Bible and Wealth, Poverty and Economy
2015: Bible and Migrants
2014: Bible and Empire

Public Conversation on the New Perspective on Paul

Close to  60 people filled the lecture room at Luther Centre, Petaling Jaya on September 15, 2016, to listen to the public conversation on the New Perspective on Paul organised by Seminari Theoloji Malaysia Centre for Theological Education by Extension. Moderated by Rev Dr Sivit Kit, this public conversation addressed some of the issues, challenges and controversies surrounding the New Perspective on Paul (NPP).

The evening began with Rev Dr Ezra Kok taking us through the historical development of NPP. This was followed by Rev Dr Lim Kar Yong's lecture on some of the controversies, misunderstanding and implications of NPP in reading Paul and also for the church today. Dr Tan Kang San then wrapped up the evening by sharing the implication of NPP for doing contextual theology and missions today. We also opened up to the floor to raise any questions for clarifications. While not all the panelists agree with NPP, we hope that we had, in some ways, demonstrated how to have meaningful dialogue and conversations with mutual respect and listening to one another.

A real bonus for the evening was the surprise visit by Prof Lo Lung Kwong from Hong Kong, who did his PhD under James Dunn.
