Herodian Oil Lamp
Oil lamps were used in the ancient days. They were small and fit in the palm of your hand and can only contain a small amount of oil.. They were only bright enough to light the area in front of you. Most homes would contain several oil lamps because olive oil was in abundance and therefore not expensive. There was also an oven that provided a little bit of light, but the oil lamps were the main source of light in every home.
One-wick oil lamps were sufficient for their daily needs. Consequently, these lamps were strategically placed in the house to provide optimum light. While they may have sat on the floor or on top of a piece of furniture, excavations frequently reveal niches for lamps on interior walls of ancient houses.
“Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
(Psalm 119:105)
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
(Matthew 25:1-13)
