Aphrodite Head
These statuettes depict the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was the goddess of fertility and reproduction. She is worshiped with great devotion in Corinth, and her temple, the Acrocorinth, was erected on a 1500 ft. high hill above the city, and had more than a thousand temple slaves and prostitutes of both men and women who had been dedicated to the goddess. The prostitutes were held in high regard (instead of immoral and shameful) by many in Corinth, so much so that they had reserved seats at the city theater. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6:12, criticized Christians who had adopted this attitude.
She is also worshiped in Paphos, where the ruins of her temple was found 7 miles southeast of Old Paphos. Tacitus recorded the visit of Titus Caesar to this temple during the Jewish War and remarks specifically on the image of the goddess that was housed there. It was here that the events of Acts 13: 8-11, where Paul challenged Elymas the sorcerer, occurred.
